OLD FLOWERS FOR US
Flowers have been a link between the feminine part of my family ever since I can remember. My grandmother, my maternal auntie (to whom i was incredible close while growing up), my mum and I, all loved flowers. I remember picking up flowers for my mum, auntie and granny when I was small and later on buying them in the streets of Lisbon when I was a teenager. I've always looked forward to spring so that i could see all the flowers coming out, I remember exactly which flowers my auntie loved the best and I remember picking up wild flowers for my mum because those are her favorite ones. Funny enough, my dad was not the romantic type that would take flowers home, and nor is my husband, but we women, were never bothered by that, as we loved presenting each other with flowers. My 4 year old daughter is following our footsteps and she absolutely adores flowers. She picks them up for me every day she can and she begs me to buy her flowers everytime we go into a supermarket that has fresh flowers on display. On her 4th birthday, I took her a bouquet of wild daisies and roses at school pick up time and she thank me for it about 10 times on the way home.
As a photographer it was only a matter of time until I decided to start a project that would celebrate this flower love that seems to be embebed in our genes. As soon as I started working on it, I reallized this project was about a lot more than the beauty of flowers. It talks about the passing of time and the small and big things that are passed on from one generation to the next. Inevitably, there's something old fashioned about it. As I go about photographing flowers which brings up so many childhood memories, i am often reminded of old postcards where flowers played an important role in creating a romantic environment.
